Su cuenca se comparte entre Quebec (16%) y los Estados Unidos (84%). El r\u00edo Richelieu desemboca en el r\u00edo San Lorenzo cerca de Sorel-Tracy. Su desembocadura est\u00e1 por lo tanto cerca del lago Saint-Pierre, un lago fluvial que constituye una zona ecol\u00f3gica de gran valor. El \u00fanico pez end\u00e9mico de Quebec, su \u00e1rea de distribuci\u00f3n es peque\u00f1a y el r\u00edo Richelieu es el \u00fanico lugar donde hay zonas de desove activas. Su dieta limitada (moluscos) y su madurez sexual tard\u00eda (10 a\u00f1os) son factores que aumentan su vulnerabilidad a la degradaci\u00f3n global de su h\u00e1bitat.<\/p><p>La vulnerabilidad del redhorse de cobre y su naturaleza end\u00e9mica a un \u00e1rea de extensi\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica restringida lo convierten en un excelente indicador de la salud general de los ecosistemas acu\u00e1ticos que componen el r\u00edo Richelieu y la cuenca del r\u00edo San Lorenzo. Desafortunadamente, la estrategia de recuperaci\u00f3n para el caballo rojo de cobre parece indefensa contra el d\u00e9bil control regulatorio de la contaminaci\u00f3n, que es vital para el \u00e9xito del programa (DFO, 2012 ).<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En este contexto, la OIDN tiene la intenci\u00f3n de movilizar a grupos ambientalistas en apoyo de una notificaci\u00f3n oficial al Gobierno de Quebec con arreglo al art\u00edculo 8.
